A place to lay my head

I prayed. I need to have a place of my own. With the many obstacles, it seems daunting.

At the National Rally, government restricts people who own both a flat and a private property to own only the private asset! This means there will be more rejected flats.

And in the news, it was reported that

Another 1,624 units spread over 10 non-mature estates will be available under the Sale of Balance Flats (SBF) exercise.

The estates include Bukit Batok, Hougang and Woodlands.

The units range from two-room to executive flats.

A four-room flat under the SBF is priced between S$190,000 and S$380,000.

I am glad to see hope ...

Miracle 1

I am now officially praying about my homeless condition. It's time to buy a house in the extreme end of this little island.

First, as a single person, there will be no grant to assist me in this first debt I'm going to throw myself into. Hence, it will be very nice if I could join name with Mummy then I can avoid paying as much as cash as a single person needs to. However, that will not be done unless the Government would allow me to apply without my Dad's name.

Yesterday, Mum told me that she prayed that if she met him, he would ask him to sign the divorce papers. First, she actually wanted to talk to him about signing, and two, she really did meet him by chance! And he agreed to sign the papers without any hassle.

Divorce is not in my Mum and my dictionary of life. Hence, I was a little tearful when she told me about her effort in talking to him...

Number 1 obstacle has been removed by God. Watch this space for what happens next :)

Timely distraction

At the Oral Exam Centre, I heard interesting tales of extreme sports, sad tales of death, sudden panic of lost finger and I momentarily forgot the dismal morning I had!

When it was time to leave, rain started to pelt down and it was fun to hear the raindrops falling over my head. How fickle emotions are! How sound affected my moods too!

A lucky draw in life

I need a lucky draw; not the type that wins me cash or condo but one that gives me a break when everything overwhelms!

To be misunderstood TWICE in a morning, to miss the stop I want to alight and walk under the blistering sun, to therefore not run the errand I want to run, to then go for another oral exam centre which is not very exciting, to then drag the tired body away knowing that all these toil will not be appreciated... And then to face the fact that I have no time left to mark...

Funny that I should feel so lousy when I meet deadlines despite the fact that I shouldn't meet the deadlines. I should feel relieved or thankful, but I simply feel drained.

A candidate of any election

Wyclef needs to have stayed in Haiti long enough to run. Yet, he stays in America most of the time.

Any successful artiste would enjoy USA more than Haiti for sure but this personal choice must be faced squarely. The fact is you've been absent in all the ups and downs. How could you come back suddenly to persuade us you truly love us and want to serve and suffer with us?

I know little about Haiti, but I understand true commitment in relationships.

Wyclef, you need to have a more intimate relationship with your nation if you've felt so strongly about the global status and internal growth of Haiti...

CNA: Wyclef Jean can't run for Haiti presidency

Why would I want a man of disrepute to run my nation? So what if he raps well?

Aug 21 2010

PORT-AU-PRINCE: International Hip-Hop star Wycleff was excluded late Friday from Haiti's November presidential election following a long deliberation by the country's electoral council.

The decision, which was announced by the council, was immediately accepted by the candidate, who reaffirmed his commitment to the rule of law.

"Though I disagree with the ruling, I respectfully accept the committee's final decision, and I urge my supporters to do the same," Jean said in a statement released after the ruling was announced.

Jean said he was inspired to run for president because he knows Haiti and believed it could become a great country with the right leadership.

"But, ultimately, we must respect the rule of law in order for our island to become the great nation we all aspire for it to be," he said.

He assured his countrymen he would continue to work for Haiti's renewal.

"Though the board has determined that I am not a resident of Haiti, home is where the heart is -- and my heart has and will always be in Haiti," Jean said.

Jean was among several dozen presidential candidates who faced challenges to their bids, and there were concerns he might not meet residency requirements because he lives primarily in the United States.

He also faces questions about US back taxes.

Haiti's November 28 election is still uncertain in the aftermath of a powerful January 12 earthquake that killed at least 250,000 people and left 1.5 million homeless.

In an open letter made public before the ruling, Jean said that whatever his own political fate, the world needed to do more to help Haiti, whose already serious woes were multiplied by the catastrophic earthquake.

But critics said that Jean's track record at helping Haiti has been spotty at best.

US actor Sean Penn, who runs a 55,000-person tent camp for the homeless in Haiti, and others have accused Jean of misusing hundreds of thousands of dollars he raised after the earthquake for a charity he ran.

"He has been virtually silent for those of us in Haiti; he has been a non-presence," Penn told CNN in an interview earlier this month.

In a report Tuesday, The New York Times spotlighted a history of poor financial management at Jean's Yele Haiti charity, including a 250,000-dollar payment it made to a television station that the singer and a cousin had recently acquired.

In an earlier statement, Jean acknowledged "missteps" at the charity before the earthquake but said claims of misappropriated funds were an "outright falsity."

"Unhappy former employees, old rumors and long negated claims are simply
distractions at this crucial juncture, when my advisers and I need total focus
on the Haitian situation," he said.

Jean is hugely popular among Haiti's youth, and some 300 of his supporters marched in heavy rain outside the country's electoral office Thursday.

"We are here to defend a just cause -- Wyclef Jean is a Haitian native, he is the candidate of the people, and we want him as our president. He should be in the electoral race," said one young demonstrator.

Jean Friday said his meeting on Thursday with Prime Minister Rene Preval "was not about stepping down.

In a Friday interview with The Miami Herald, Jean said Preval was concerned about alleged death threats against him and asked if he needed more security.

Jean said the president, during the meeting, arranged a call with his presidential pick, Jude Celestin, as a way of showing he did not want any "ugliness" in the upcoming election.

What inspires

I cried last night.

I cried again today. All because of Low Wei Jie, a 12-year-old boy.

The Compassvale Primary School student kept pace with around 100 Youth Olympic Flame torchbearers on 10 August, running for more than two hours as the torch went past schools and residential districts from Greendale Secondary School to Hougang Stadium. The 12-year-old covered a distance of around 15km and he did it wearing a T-shirt, bermudas and flip-flops.

He was deemed too slow to bear the torch but when he saw the torch on 10 August, he just ran.

I'm honoured to be a citizen of the same country as this boy.

Practice Makes Perfect

事事不如愿时,
人算不如天算时,
梦想依旧象梦遗时,
'熟能生巧'还说得过去吗?

Could the practice of not having your desires fulfilled become perfect?
Would one become more and more adept at facing the impossibilities and the unexpected in life?

A thin line between Stoicism and Despondency

Miura, Kanagawa

I wrote to a friend in Japan recently.

Realising that he is now based in Miura, I started to google details on the place. (Who has heard of 'Miura', please raise your hand)

It thrives on fishing! This means it's near the sea and I love the sea! And sea in Japan I haven't seen any! See, in my excitment, my ability to speak in English destroyed! Happily so!

Here, I announce: I'm going to phuket, Thailand in September!

Pakistan, Russia and India

Matters are getting from bad to worse.

  • Russia's fire is nearing the nuclear plants
  • Pakistan natural disasters and the world's accusing aids being swallowed in corruption
  • China has recently just suffered a loss at Sichuan Earthquake and now a serious flood has taken more lives.

The rest of us are survivors ... for how long? 'Eat, drink and be merry' should hardly be a sensible way of looking at things now.

Black and White Sentiments

One of my favourite video internet sites is http://www.tudou.com/.

It's a surprise when I went into the site an hour ago. Everything was in black and white. And its search is limited only to 'Mourning for the Victims of Danqu".

A site which is completely dedicated to mourning. When a friend of mine passed away during her Honeymoon, I felt that mourning should include black and white, and little pleasure. Why should I be surprised at China's grief?

Another photo with Celebrity

Maybe, not many people know about Liang Wen Fu, but he is a talented star in all the songs he writes.

He teaches in a university and I enjoyed the simple way he explained Tang Dynasty poetry.

It's wonderful to see his creativity in the Chinese language. I feel proud that I've followed all the xinyao when I was a teenager!

YOG and Chinese Restaurant

Even Tung Lok Restaurant is supporting the YOG!

The wet tissue they provide is completely focused on the Triathlon event! Nothing about Tung Lok was mentioned at all...

Patriotic?

Trendy?

Sporty?

The schools were assigned a country which we could show our support to. And Peirce Secondary School drew a very big canvas of Niger and sports. It is amazing how a tiny island of mere 704 square kilometres (one hour drive from east to west end) could sustain the magnitude of yet another world event.

In 1973 and 1993, Singapore hosted the Southease Asian (SEA) Games. And now, we've propelled forward to host an olympic size event.
Would the people in Singapore have an increased passion and awareness of more sports after this event? Many schools are involved in performing, hosting, and many volunteers are referee, logistic help and many other roles are fulfilled by Singaporeans. Surely, the awareness will increase by leaps and bounds.

Adore Life

The little girl is on the cover of a diary I've dedicated to one particular area of my life - NPCC. Every single event that concerns my cadets and my teachers are in this pretty little book. The busier the life, the more I must consciously dedicate spaces to adore it.
I'm a survivor!
And the magnetic bookmark below the 'notes' is a drawing from Jimmy. It disrupts the mundane lines in my diary of daily events.
Life is Adorable because the Lord who is just and loving, gives strength to those who trust in Him.

Youth Olympics 2010

Finally, the short queue which took a long time to shorten reached its end. We got the Youth Olympic (YOG) Opening Ceremony tickets!

It caused a funny stir in my heart when I see people of different nationality buying tickets for YOG. Why am I so lukewarm about it? I, who am proud of Singapore for winning the bid to host this olympics?

I guess the $80 ticket for opening ceremony did throw me off a little. And I do not watch any sports in the first place. And I'm sure I'm proud of Singapore for hosting this because I bought the souvenirs and sent them overseas!

GRIN.

View from Stadium Station

This is the view on the left of the Stadium Station. The National Stadium!

Circle Line!

View on the right of Stadium MRT. A gentle passing of the evening into the night.

By the way, there are no seats in the station. If you're waiting for the train, you're expected to be very fit as you can only stand. Well, we can be thankful that it's not a long wait for any of the trains :)

Stadium Station

Have you explored the Circle Line? This is my first trip to Stadium MRT. It really is located just across the National Stadium! Love the pictures at the top of the escalator.

Appreciate Cuteness

At Olio Dome still. I can understand why students bring stuff toy to school. It does brighten the table top which is covered by mundane stationery.

My turtle's cheeks have the marks of a teacher - a stroke of red pen as blusher. Sigh...

A Day without Plans

10 Aug, Tuesday is a holiday for students and teachers.

I decided to mark. So I brought my beloved to the olio dome cafe. Apple Crumble accompanied my hours of marking. Yes, I completed much with my beloved papers.

Nation I could call Home

Jim Yardley, with contribution from Hari Kumar published an article on India's solution to the Poor on 9 August 2010. This is the same day as my nation's day of celebration of Independence. After reading that article in New York Times, I had many thoughts about nationhood, community service and prayer for the world.

Singapore : being born here has given me many opportunities which I know I won't get in many nations. What's the likelihood that two lowly-educated adults get offsprings who become university graduates? In Singapore, this is possible. And it's the planning of some compassionate or far-sighted people in government. I benefited.

In so many ways, Singapore truly deserves a resounding cheer

Happy Birthday Singapore!

Impoverished in India

42% of Indian children under age 5 are underweight. The food system has existed for more than half a century and has become riddled with corruption and inefficiency. Studies show that 70 percent of a roughly $12 billion budget is wasted, stolen or absorbed by bureaucratic and transportation costs.

A man tried to apply for the ration card thrice without receiving it. In Jhabua,an official printed 3,500 fake ration cards to give to relatives and friends when spate of children die of malnutrition in villages in that district. Money landers keep the ration cards of the poor so that they can get the subsidised grain (4 cents per kilogram) to sell them at 6 times the price.

Not every poor gets help.

How to make a difference?

It's not just about donating money to the poor. It's about how to help in practical ways. Within the system of the poor. It's about bothering to ask the teenagers with the tins on Flag Day, "how would this money be spent?" It's about being involved physically in the work. It's about finding out the culture and the needs of that community.

Of course, there is no easy solution to poverty. This world remains sinful until perfection comes.

Japanese Magazine July 2010

I first bought Japanese magazines to improve my vocabulary grasp of the language. The words in magazines are used to describe fashion, feelings, and to give advice. These words are not the norm in textbooks.

As time goes by, I am convinced that the layout and the information given are more interesting and purer in content. It's easy to see how all Singapore fashion magazines highlight on how to achieve sexual highs. But Japanese magazines do not. At least they did not until these 3 or 4 years. Now the Japanese magazines also have a few pages on what men and women like about courtship and hence, one or two sections may mention their preference in men and women. However, it's more of the psychology of men and women rather than the physical sexual appetites. One example is (at this juncture, I stopped typing to flip through the magazines to find an example... it's not easy to locate one) "No boyfriend to spend Christmas with this year! How would I know that an acquaintance I made is interested in me?"

Such topics are the focus in the 5 pages out of the 300 pages of a magazine. What is in the rest of the magazine?
  • how to dress this season
  • how people dress on the streets
  • how to wear the kimono (seasonal)
  • how to make-up/ do your hair
  • accessories of different provinces
  • exercises for desk-bound/ city folks
  • cooking
  • how to use space in a tiny apartment
  • advertisements

And I love their freebies! See, this is the bag from Paul & Joe (famous Japanese cosmetic brand) I received from this magazine in the photograph!

Interest in Comics

When I was 13, I used to believe that reading comic books is a very silly use of time. It does not enrich the mind, the language used is simple and there is absolutely not a good use of time.

Then, my friends started reading comic books in class after the prelims in Sec 4. Out of boredom and much persuasion from one comic addict, I started reading 'Dragon Balls'. Gosh. Hooked!

I haven't read any since I moved out of Toa Payoh 3 years ago. Lately, Kinokuniya bookshop has 20% discount. Hence, I bought some. My interest always have to do with ethnic costumes or culture. And I learnt much about Noh Theatre practioners through the 'Noh Youth' comic book (on right in picture)

Do you know that black hair is the accepted norm in the performing group culture?

Do you know that the Noh performers could hardly see behind their masks?

Good Feedback is Time-consuming

After reading 'Improving Student Achievement'by Toni Glasson, I've confirmed some of my beliefs concerning marking student assessment and most of all, gained some clarity in the area of giving feedback. Not only do I need to give a remark on how to improve, I would also add a remark as to how the student has achieved :)

ASSESSMENT for Learning

The giving of marks and the grading function are oeremphasized, while the giving of useful advice and the learning function are underemphasized. (Black and William 1998a)

Assessment for Learning - Student's work

A student has problems with paragraphing here. It would have been faster if I've written 'paragraphs!' as a comment.

However, this student will not have a clear understanding of how to make the improvements unless this lack of paragraphs is a careless mistake or one that is created out of pure laziness.
