Beauty

Been eyeing wooden furniture with rattan. And oh! This one has that little charming rim of fabric round each drawer!

I'm sorry, I know there's really no place for ya in my room. But you're coming into my space, regardless.

Kathy's Wedding

I've finally come of age. I actually requested not to help out at a wedding in pre-wedding preparation.

All my friend's wedding I've always had a hand. But this year, I live at the end of the island and started a new job. And I think there's too much roles to look at as ICs.

In the end, Kathy had enough help and I was totally and completely a guest. She was gracious. And happy. And I thank God.

We are trusted

19 that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting people's sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation. 20 We are therefore Christ's ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ's behalf: Be reconciled to God.

Christmas in Raffles City

One week ago, Lerk Thai restaurant waiters are all in Santa's hats.
This week, most shops have Christmas themes. And Robinsons have made two golden reindeers. :)

Like a moth to the Flame

My infatuation with scented candles started much later than what my friend hoped to inspire in me. I was given a scented candle when I was 15 years old. I didn't fall in love with that mystic flame then.

A few Christmases ago, I walked to my favourite Ginger body range displayed in Robinsons (raffles city). At Origins, that was the first time I found out that my favourite scent comes in candle form. Enticed by the scent, I bought the candle without any idea of what I'm gonna do about it. You see, I have no room of my own. And if my mum found out that I spent a few ten dollar notes on ONE candle, I would likely perish like the candle wax of a litted candle. Not a very desirable prospect.

I finally lit my candle this year. All inspired by the fact that the odour after cooking lingered in my hostel apartment. And the smell did not completely disappear after I lit the candle for 8 hours.

I was then inspired to look for more potent candles or other forms of home fragrances. I am delighted to see the candles going on 50% sale at Crabtree & Evelyn. And best of all, Shanghai Tang has the scent I've been yearning for since I walked past Tiffany & Co as well as Shanghai Tang. Now 'ginger flower' is mine!

Season of Spanish

Counting down to one month and four days to take off to Peru.

Last saturday was the end of the 20 hour elementary Spanish Class. And I've decided to create a vocab book for useful phrases for traveling. But a colleague told me that there's such a thing lonely planet phrase book!

I then noticed it - the entire row in Popular bookshop. In the end, I got something else - berlitz series has CD :) that helped me to decide to spend 10 dollars more to get Berlitz :)

Uno se despide insensiblemente

y entonces comprendes
como están de ausentes las cosas queridas.

Por eso muchacho no partas ahora
soñando el regreso
que el amor es simple
y a las cosas simples
las devora el tiempo.

ENGLISH

One says goodbye to gradually
little things
the same as a tree in autumn time
it dies by its leaves.

After the sadness is the slow death
simple things
those simple things
that you are hurting in the heart.

One always comes back to the old sites
in that loved life
and then to understand
as it stands of absent beloved.

Why boy not Parthian now
Dreaming the return
love is simple
and the simple things
the gulps down time.

Pain in confessed sin

I am doing hostel duty and that prevented me from going to church today.

Hence, I have my solo worship service as usual in my own apartment. And I chose a sermon based on Psalm 130 by Joshua Harris.

To my surprise, it addresses the exact message about what to do when my brother or sister sin against God. He indeed hear my cry. I cry from the depth and He hears me.

For all his sermons, you can go to Covenant Life Church website
http://www.covlife.org/resources

And his sermon on Psalm 130 could be found at this link

interesting experience - Beef stew

To prepare the beef stew, I did a few 'firsts'

It's my first time to

a) uncork a bottle of red wine

b) and to try to keep the wine when the cork swell too much to be used again (pasted a plastic wrap round the mouth and wound a rubber band round it)

c) slice onion in this apartment and loving it

d) slice the potatoes without having cooked them first

e) using beef broth in my cooking

beef broth

I was too lazy to make my own beef broth. Hence I bought it off the shelf and it is 99% fat-free and totally free of preservatives and MSG. I'll try the recipe it has on the back of its packaging within these three days.

First Beef Stew in Slow Cooker

It's funny. I didn't know that the slow cooker will take a longer time to cook than the usual stoves.

I finally was educated when two friends came and tasted the three-hour slow-cooked soup. It was as plain as could be. Then, they said that they usually let the pot work for 6 - 8 hours!

The next day, I met a student and shared with her my experience with slow cooker. She told me her family usually use the pot only for meat dishes. That inspired me.

After surfing many sites for beef stew, I decided to shop at Cold Storage and got these ingredients:

$4.20 Russel potato 2.27kg
$13.50 Winemaker Marlot red wine 750 ml
$2.20 red onion
$1.90 peeled baby carrot
$3.45 campbell's beef stock
$12.75 beef cube (0.328 X 38.90/ kg)
$3.42 red capsicum (2)

I sliced and chopped the onion, sliced the potato, put a little salt on each beef cube, sliced the capsicum and threw in the carrot as they are. Half a bottle of red wine and 250ml of beef stock is poured in. I added some shitake mushroom which were left after the dinner two nights ago.

Now, lets hope for the best when I wake up tomorrow.

Rattan canes

The bottom right with the green brim is made by me!

I love rattan

When I was a little girl, my skin has rested on rattan much more than it has on plastic. You see, chairs were made of rattan. Rattan canes woven has natuaral cavities which allow ventilation and in this tropical heat, these little vents for our much rested cheeks prevent warts and heat rash.

However, in Chinese culture, it's also used as a tool to punish children who misbehave. And I've got my fair share of caning. The initial fear of it was slowly replaced by rebellious youthful angst, and later completely eradicated by sense of injustice. 'Why should I be caned because I desire to play with my friends?' For my father, misbehaving teenagers must be dealt with as criminals are with canes. But he's a father afterall - when he noticed that I would be caned but would have no fear nor tears, he was afraid. I did not understand parents' love nor worry at 13 years old. And so I did not sense that he was at his wit's end. All I know was I must win my war for freedom! ;p

I became a christian at 14 years old, and though I didn't think my stoic crusade for a teenager's freedom was wrong, I began to want to do what pleased God. And one of the commandments was 'honour your parents'. Another one was to 'love your neighbour as yourself'. And another was to be gentle.

The rattan cane returned into my hands last week. This time, I used many of them to make a little basket ;). Weaving memories of my trip to Kampong Pelegong into the twists and turns of the rattan canes :)

Another Free T-shirt

As an active member of the education sector, one of the things I get for free is T-shirt. I've gotten the fourth one today. And it's a shirt for an event of the past. Have you seen the date printed on the shirt?

I'm not complaining. I'm very proud of Singapore Arts Festival. How many countries could boast of such art capital, such clout in bringing groups from as far as America and as near as Malaysia? Nobody quarrels with us and hence, we even staged a slightly imperialitic Japanese show as the opening for this year's Arts Festival. (You would have read about this cow in my previous entry).

Oh yes, the reason I received this shirt was that I attended a talk about next year's Arts Festival. More contemporary and experimental works. None of the classic. The closest was an offshoot of Shakespeare's Lear entitled "Lear Dreaming".

Contentment is rare

Contentment is a kind of complacency creative people rarely have.

It's with much grace, training and renewal of the mind that I could worship what is true. To be faithful to what is unseen, to rejoice in the truth that never changes.

God has been merciful to me. So my soul is saved.

Yet, the restlessness within me reigns on. Asking questions, seeking new ways to conduct lesson, reading more, watching more, creating more...

Engaged, motivated and open to the world... I am loving the free spirit within more and more... Yet anchored in the eternal truth that I am saved to 'go and make disciples of all nations' and in all the explorations of the nations, He says 'And surely, I am with you always, till the very end of the age.'

Mystery of World Heritage

Once a venue is listed as a World Heritage site by UNESCO, its value in tourist dollars rise.

For me, it's not its status as a WH site which draws me there. It has always been the place itself. And after falling in love with that place, I'll search it out. Then will I notice its WH status, which would drop a little pebble of disappointment in my romantic heart - there will be too many OTHERS. And these OTHERS come for probably its beauty, its status and how many would come truly because of a passion, a loving admiration...

Well, I suddenly realise I have a little narcissism in me too. This indulgence in myself is clear when I saw this advertisement by Nikon. I want to dress in such carefree bohemian style to take a photo at the next country I go to...

Singapore National Day 2011

a group of friends came to my place to wave Singapore flag, stand to say the pledge and sing the anthem. All these done in total sobriety - no alcohol influence. Amazing that we could go on and on about how ridiculous our performances are and yet feel super proud, proud enough to sing the anthem without coercion

Worship Service on 31 July 2011

Doing hostel duty which required me to stay in the hostel. Hence, I have my own time of worship with the Lord. Very blessed time.

Singing:
All the way my Saviour Leads me
Constantly Abiding

Sermon By John MacArthur
Taking the Mystery out of the Will of God

Closing song:
Abba Father let me be
Yours and Yours alone
May my will forever be
Ever more Your own

What's the conclusion of the whole sermon?
God's will for us is

  1. to be saved

  2. to be Spirit-filled (controlled by the Spirit)

  3. be sanctified

  4. be submissive

  5. to suffer

  6. to say thanks to Him

Then, which university should I go? which woman should I marry? which job should I apply for? What is the will of God for me?

God loves to reveal His will to those who love Him, this means that His will is
not hidden - so where to find His will?

Know His will in His word. But true lovers of God will not just want to know His will, we'll plead with Him to help us DO His will.

'Teach me to do your will, for you are my God' Psalm 143:10a

Are you doing God's will? Just to paraphrase the above 6 points briefly:

  1. Do you embrace the Son and obey Him?

  2. Are your thoughts, actions and words controlled by the Spirit?

  3. Are you separated from sin and your body is managed to please God?

  4. Are you submitting to authorities and one another?

  5. Are you living so righteously that the world reacts?

  6. Do you always rejoice?

If you're doing all the above 6 points, then do whatever you want. Because God's ways are thus:

'Delight yourself in the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart' Ps 37: 4

My plans for Bhutan...

Sohnam is from Bhutan. He joined us at every place of interest in Chengdu. While he leaves us to meet other tour agencies to promote Bhutan tourism, he makes friends with all of us from the conference to create awareness of his tour agency.

On the first day, he appeared with the Bhutan robe (Goh). Gosh, we all swoon. With his gentle and shy ways, he won many friends. Now, a breakdown of what I found out about tour with Sohnam if I could have a 6-person tour (USD):

royalty 95
tour per day (ie. tariff) 180
flight from Singapore to Thailand 300
flight from Thailand to Bhutan 900

total for 8 day trip: USD 2735
@ exchange rate of 1.2 is SGD 3,288.19

I want to goooooo!!!!!

A clear conscience

Acts 24: 15-16

and I have the same hope in God as these men, that there will be a resurrection of both the righteous and the wicked. So I strive always to keep my conscience clear before God and man

It's strange how when accused, I still stand weak before the accuser. And it took me many days of praying before I could conclude that my conscience was and is clear. There is no need to waver in front of the accuser. No one is righteous before God, but if we have truly loved God and people, then there is no need to flog ourselves to find the imperfect moments. This may sound like a sub-standard way of walking uprightly, but seriously, Jesus came to give us grace:

Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. ~ Matthew 11: 28

and also

Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. 30For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.
~ Matthew 11: 29-30

He did not come to persecute us. Let us dwell in the grace that is shed so abundantly. Love God and enjoy His love... Be confident in having victory over sins. For Christ has won us over by His blood... Walk faithfully, keep our eyes on Jesus, on our future.

Let us look forward to going home with a shout of victory...

陶身体剧场

Watching a production which is produced by a 4-year-old company. The theme seems to be an honest recalling of the body. 60 minutes without interval.

After a long time of flipping through the programme, I realised the name of the work is '2'. 2 souls in conversation.

What piques my interest is the founder Tao Ye started a new company because he was fed up with the then established Chinese choreographers. This fact is printed in the programme. Hmmm... Honesty?

A Game of You

I received this disc from the performers at 'A Game of You'. It recorded what I said during the performance.

Although there wasn't a big deal going on in the half hour, I left feeling grateful. A group of 7 people took time to listen to you, to look (or maybe to watch) at you, to cause you to look at yourself and ask you questions. Few people in life take time to look, to listen, to want to be with you... I mean genuinely. Being with you without an attempt to fill up their own loneliness, or just plainly wanting to know you...

Thank you for seeing me...

Slow down, listen to the silence

INHABITANTS
By Teatro de los Sentidos
29 May, Sunday

Using tin and string, and an envelope, the audience was invited to walk into the performance space without ushers. How ingenious - this started our journey of negotiating with the actors about giving them permission to work with us in the performance.

The puzzle piecing of Singapore, the revelation of labyrinths, the introduction of a simple gift with clear sincerity, the gentle leading of the actors, everything was a surreal experience.

At one celebratory moment, I danced r numbers and was kissed on the cheek by a mischievous actor. Funny thing was his action didn't look out of place at all! And I no liberal too! Asians don't kissn you know...

Happily happily, the whole experince of forgetting someone and thus that person would eventually forget us... Would that result in a state of a less-of-us?

Beautiful, sensitive, moving... A piece I wouldn't want to forget

First episode of Suzuki Fish

I was told that this marinated miso suzuki fish must be put in aluminium foil. Then, proceed to place it in a toaster. As I have no such electrical gadget, I decided to create my own.

There was a worrying splattering sound in the pot soon. I then tried steaming. Ha ha...

Then, I removed the fish from the foil and directly pan fry them...

All in all, a ten-minute cooking session ended up as a 45 minute work. Oh, but the taste is worth it :)

Final episode of Suzuki Fish

This is a very simple meal which I took 45 minutes to do!!!! As I didn't know what to do with my fish! Read the next episode to find out more.

I'm really learning

This year, God showed me how everything I do, all the perseverance and reliance on Him brings greater glory and joy than if I've done the desires of the heart.

How bringing a 12-year-old girl to a library could ignite her love for reading, how being not angry in every way could turn a child of God around, how loving God in the past brings me to understand more and more how to love His kingdom...

It's less rocky each time I deny self and bear the cross. But it doesn't take away the burden or the pain. Jesus told us, "My yoke is easy."

O Lord, I believe.

from Straits Times about that productions which angered me

I have this haunting urge to find out what Straits Times review would be for this production. And though I found the review totally missing the point of Japan imperialism, and though I disagree with the phrase "There was a lot to see but very little to feel or think about', I felt a sense of relief that the journalist at least bothered to comment.

WHEN A GREY TAIWANESE COW STRETCHED IshinhaMain Stage, Festival VillageWednesday
When a grey Taiwanese cow stretched, what happened? Across the continents and oceans, an Uruguayan cow felt a movement behind it and looked around.
That is according to this gorgeous production by Osaka-based troupe Ishinha, which will open the Singapore Arts Festival tonight at the specially constructed Festival Village in Esplanade Park.
This is a tale of hidden histories and connections, of journeys across seas and of the hopes of individuals to forge their destinies in exotic lands abroad.
In patchwork form, it tells the stories of young Japanese people in the early 1900s who ventured from the Japanese islands to Taiwan, the Philippines and the Indonesian archipelago.
One harvested pearls in the Arafura Sea. Another created the biggest dam in Asia in Taiwan. Another entrepreneur built up a Little Japan, a thriving economy of businesses and inns, in Saipan, Vietnam.
There was no faulting the production design and visual bravura here, even if the material did not always make a strong connection with the audience and the production was too long at almost two hours.
The stage, a wooden main platform with different islands of staggered height in the background, stood handsomely against the Singapore skyline. Depending on the scene, different components were added to it, such as two dilapidated houses that were wheeled in in the background or moving boats that ended up being 'floated' in a small gap downstage.
Director and playwright Yukichi Matsumoto realised an original and uncompromising vision of human endeavour and migration.
His script, which combined documentary snippets with poetic incantations and geography lists, had an all-encompassing, epic sweep that made the movements of his human travellers echo the movement of the stars and the drift of the currents.
He staged meditative tableaux with actors doing hypnotic, repetitive actions. Dressed in simple costumes and hats that evoked an earlier, rural Japan, the strong cast of 26 performed a rhythmic, spoken word song, set to beautiful music by Kazuhisa Uchihashi. Their synchronised movements and the easy group chemistry was a pleasure to behold.
Echoes of traditional Japanese opera haunt the show, both in the painted faces and arms of the actors, as well as the emphasis on disciplined movement and music.
Watch out for a gigantic man that comes out. He has a few costume changes and sometimes he evokes the evil capitalist looming over an industrial city, sometimes a defeated soldier.
Aesthetically and formally, the piece was a great success but where it stumbled was in its connection to the audience. There was a lot to see but very little to feel or think about.
In their abstracted forms, it was hard to feel invested in the personal stories of bravery and risk-taking on stage. One experienced them as part of a beautiful montage of sights and sounds.
Some of the more static scenes could have also been tightened - the wooden seats and the muggy air were unforgiving elements in outdoor theatre.
That said, there is a lot to admire in this ambitious, lyrical production with a mythic reach. Go to see a unique theatrical vision, but take along a fan.

I was shocked at myself

I didn't clap at the end of the performance.

After watching a physically demanding, well-coordinated and engaging performance, I couldn't clap. In fact, I was dreading the end of the show - should I clap?

Although it truly was about the immigration of the Japanese in the 21st century, it came from the perspective of the Japanese. It celebrates how entrepreneurial and efficient its immigrants were as early as the early 21st century. And it came to world war II. More accurately, it came to the successful bombing of Pearl Harbour and the shock of seeing the mushroom blast at Nagasaki. Then twenty-five years later, they found the loyal Japanese soldier who still believed that the war was on. And then very little else was said till 2010.

My anger at what happened in WW II was aroused once again. The stress on the distress of the Japanese took so much humility from me to be able to be compassionate... They have the right to share their pain too... My perspective is still being pruned by God. God does not give up on me.

No difficulty locating my seats

Should I be insulted when the usher asked, "do you need help?" When I was locating my seat? Of course not. But really, this is the easiest seating plan. No-brainer.

Like the spacious seat. My comrades on this sweltering night bought food and drinks too. Now, the one sitting next to me has started fanning herself frantically. I looked into my goodie bag (not everyone gets one). There's a glorious paper fan! The best item ever!

After having the stub of the ticket returned to me, it was an upward climb. I'm getting hot for this whole performance - LITERALLY. Interesting scaffold. Loreal 打入冷宫

The loreal eye cream has been used without obvious results. It's time to recognise that my puffy eyes are my destiny?

NO WAY. Wa ha ha!

Here comes The Faceshop with their much sought after 美人图 brand of face care products. Original price of this eye cream is $76 but after pre-Singapore sale 15% discount, I got it at $64.60. I know it's still expensive but it boasts of rejuvenation of my tired eyes. And they are havine Kim Hyun Joong as their product model. I have shallow reasons for supporting this brand ;p. Well, beauty IS only skin deep. How intelligent should I be when it comes to beauty?

In sum, my eyes will stare at this world in fantastic glamour after a month of using 美人图 eye cream... I know you're rolling your eyes. Be careful, skin around your eyes might be stressed by that

Worry

I didn't say it. I don't want to say it. But I'm so worried, so worried.

Will he pull through this difficult period? will he read God's word and understand his role in God's kingdom? Has he decided to do what is right? Oh, why must I feel this heartbreak? To see someone loving God so deeply and yet throw it aside because of... Because of... I'm reluctant to name it.

He doesn't know how much pain and anxiety we're all going through. He just knew that we are meddlesome and setting difficult standards.

Innocence? Ignorance?

No one to tell my concern to as no one else knows him on this little island. And I can't call him direct to hear about his day.

Oh God, oh God, deliver him from such temptation o Lord.

This reminds me the first time I knelt and prayed for the recovery of a friend in my first church camp... Heart is breaking...

Meekness

Meekness is strength under control. It's easy to be angry, to hurt, to lie, to accuse. To not hurt when you're threatened, to not lie to protect ourselves, to not accuse when envious, to not seduce when endowed with beauty, all these is strength.

Learning korean from books and tapes

Decided to start on my korean lessons today. And so I decided to take out all my 'teachers'. To my surprise, two of them are still fully wrapped in tight-fitting plastic from Kinokuniya bookshop. Poor neglected knowledge.

The two big books on the left of the picture were amazing once unbound. All the proper books/ korean lessons would expect you to learn how to write Korean before forming any word or sentence. Hence, I need serious help to learn to write. The book 'Writing Korean for Beginners' ($47.00 aftr 20% discount at Kinokuniya) is just like any elementary writing book. Great expectations to be great writer soon!

The other big book is a wonderful surprise (this happens when you're blessed with no memory space and can't remember that you've bought this item). 李凖基 ie. Lee Jun Ki , a korean pop star teaches you korean!

The next book is written in Japanese! I found that the Japanese are very good in teaching languages. They explain systematically and clearly with good examples. I can't say that they did as good a job with the English language though. Somehow, their books to teach their own people English has never been as good as the way they teach Asian languages.

And the little fat book is a dictionary. It came all the way from Korea! At the time when I needed one, the only store that sells it cost more than $50! Hence, I asked my friend who went to Korea to get me one :) When I've finished my writing course, I'll try to find out what the story is about!
